H. D. ROBERTSON WAS AMONG THE FIRST ARRIVALS IN JEFFERSON COUNTY.

One of the first arrivals in Jefferson County was Hezekiah Dave (sic - Day) ROBERTSON, who came here in 1839. He arrived on horseback. Shortly following his arrival he purchased a section of land in the Collett community, paying for his purchase, at the price of $1.25 an acre, with silver quarters which he had carried in his saddle-bags all the way from Clark County, Indiana. His son, A. T. ROBERTSON, built his home in 1843, and this residence is still standing, being occupied at present by W. C. STOUT. W. A. ROBERTSON of Libertyville is a grandson of H.D., and the son of A. T. ROBERTSON.

(See Bethel Cemetery, Lick Creek Twp., Van Buren County, for John D. ROBERTSON, 1809-1857.) A 1924 History of Bethel Church relates: In 1840 John D. and James ROBERTSON, devout Methodists, moved with their families from Clark Couty, Indiana, to this neighborhood, and the church was built on John's land. Nathan ROBERTSON, grandfather of the ROBERTSONs mentioned, had been the leading spirit in building the first Methodist church in Indiana which was built on his farm in Clark County in 1807. It still stands. It was called Bethel so it is hardly necessary to say why the new church here was called Bethel.....
