Poulson, J. C.
Another Old Settler GoneJ.C. POULSON, one of the oldest Pioneers of this part of Jasper county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Sharp, in this city, at ten o'clock last Sunday evening, April 21, 1907, after a brief illness. He seemed as well as usual until Saturday morning when he complained of difficulty breathing. He grew rapidly worse, and his death was due to heart failure.
Jahu C. Poulson was born in Harrison county, Ohio, July 20, 1820 and was married to Mahala Spray, March 25, 1845. Nine children were born to them, of whom four sons and three daughters survive, beside fifteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Mr. And Mrs. Poulson came to Iowa in 1849, locating in Wapello county; two years later they removed to Jasper county and settled on the farm two miles north of Colfax, which he owned at the time of his death, and where he had continuously resided for fifty-four years. About a year and a half ago he came to live in the homes of his daughters, Mrs. John Shissler and Mrs. Sharp.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church on Wednesday at 2 o'clock, largely attended by old neighbors and friends of the family. Rev. Stahl, of Anita, former pastor of the deceased, preached the sermon.
All the children were present except Mrs. Ella DeReus who was not able to attend, and his second son, Milton, of Tippecanoe, Ohio. His nephews, William and Oscar Poulson, of Madison county, John Poulson and wife, Mrs. Emmett Poulson of Altoona , and Mrs. John Poulson of Des Moines, were also in attendance at the obsequies.
J.C. Poulson was of strong physique, upright and honorable in principle and a devout Christian, having been a member of the M. E. church nearly seventy years.
The family wish to express their thanks to neighbors and friends for assistance and sympathy.
Note: I have always believed the first name was Jehu, but have found it as John and Jahu as this clipping had it written. The notice of Proof of Will also had it as Jahu.
