Arthur A. Phillips was the son of Thos. and Harriette R. Phillips, and was born in Knox County, Ohio, February 17, 1861. His death occurred at Hattiesburg, Mississippi, April 24, 1907. When he was a young child in 1864, his parents came to Jasper County, Iowa, and settled on a farm five miles west of Newton.

In 1884, on October 15, he married Miss Martha Morton. They went to Chamberlain, South Dakota to reside, where Mr. Phillips was in the lumber business. While in that city twenty-three years ago, he united with the Congregational Church. At the time of his death he was a member of the Belton Avenue Presbyterian Church of Chicago, Ill.

In later years Mr. Phillips was engaged in the lumber business in Colfax and Nevada, and six years ago went to Chicago, where he was connected with Marsh-Hathaway, an extensive lumber company, as traveling salesman, and thus his business took him to several southern and western states.

Between last Christmas and New Years, with his wife he left Chicago on a trip to Mississippi. The southern climate did not agree with his wife, who had poor health, and after a few weeks they returned to Chicago. Six weeks ago Mr. Phillips returned to Mississippi. His wife remained in Chicago, until a week ago Saturday, when she came to the home of her mother, Mrs. W. W. Morton, in this city.

Everyday her husband wrote her and she knew that he was not feeling as well as usual, but not until the message came the day before his death did she, or any of his family here, know that he had the typhoid fever.

A week ago Saturday morning he went to the hospital in Hattiesburg and there his death occurred at 10:30 o’clock on Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Phillips, who was completely prostrated at first by the death of her husband, has together with the members of her husband’s family, mourned the death of many loved one in the last few years.

Her father, W. W. Morton, died May 27, 1901. In July of the next years, Mr. Phillips youngest sister, Mrs. Charles E. Downs, and an infant, died at Wichita, Kansas. Eight months later his father, T. R. Phillips passed away. That same year, on the first day of November 1903, their only child, Glen, a bright handsome boy fourteen years of age, was taken. Last September the 17th, occurred the death of his nephew, Ira Phillips. Ira’s mother died the next month and the father, Edward Phillips’ death occurred in November following.

Mrs. R. T. Phillips’ three children, the daughter and two sons, have all died of typhoid fever and their remains were brought here for burial.

The funeral for Arthur Phillips was held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from Mrs. W. W. Morton’s home on South Scott Street. The services were conducted by Rev. W. W. Hess of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. Charles Tenny of the Baptist Church. The services were attended by a number of Masons both from Colfax and Newton lodges, deceased being a member of the lodge at the former place.

The Masons from Colfax attending the funeral were: Henry Thomas, A. A. Penquite, D. M. Tripp and Messrs Lemen and Wright.

The burial service was given partly at the home and completed at the grave by O. N. Wagley. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, April 30, 1907, Page 1, Column 4
