Lucy Jane Dooley was born February 27, 1860, in Jasper County, Iowa. Her death occurred April 6, 1907, after two weeks’ illness in this city. She was married to Alpheus Slagel, October 24, 1878. To them were born three children, Jennie Maye, now Mrs. George Howell; Sarah Emma, Mrs. Walter Kent; and Frances Almeda, Mrs. Lewis Wilson, all of this county.

Besides her husband and daughters she is survived by three sisters and four brothers: Mrs. M. R. Hammer, Mrs. Jno Cook, Mrs. George Guessford, and Messrs Charles E. Dooley, of Jasper County, and William C. Dooley, of Calhoun County. All were with her during her last illness.

In the year 1898 Mrs. Slagel united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a kind and affectionate wife and mother and was loved by all who knew her.

Deceased was ready for the change when it came. To the last her thoughts were of heavenly things, and she seemed anxiously awaiting the end.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at three o’clock form the Mount Zion Church, Rev. Cummins of Killduff officiating. The interment was in the cemetery near the church. ~ The Newton Daily News, Monday, April 8, 1907, Page 1, Column 4
