An Old Settler Gone

Mr. Anderson Vowell was born in Anderson county, Tenn., on the 8th day of February, 1804; was married to Margaret Wharton in 1825, and emigrated to Putnam county, Indiana, where he lived until 1849, when he came to Iowa, settling in Jasper in 1850. He lost his wife and two of his children in the fall 1854; and married Mrs. Marian Kelly in 1855; again in 1856 he lost his wife and two of his children, and in 1857 he married Miss Letty Calison [sic-Callison]. He has buried 9 children and has 10 living, he was attacked with a light stroke of Paralysis on the 8th of April, gradually growing worse until the 15th when he died. He was buried between his two first wives in the Newton cemetery. Thus passed from our midst a man of great constitution, and although unlettered, of more than ordinary ability. B. HURST ~ The Newton Journal, April 25, 1883.
