Mrs. Burton Hurst, one of the early settlers of this county, died at her home in Sherman Township on Wednesday, the 11th, of dropsy. ---------------------------------------
Mrs. Burton Hurst, a notice of whose death we published last week, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Vowel, who were among the most prominent of the early settlers in this vicinity, their home being in Vowel's grove on the stage road just east of Cherry Creek. Mrs. Hurst's age was nearly sixty-five years. She was a native of Putnam County, Ind., where she was married to Burton Hurst in February 1849, and in May of that same year they came to Jasper County and settled on a farm in Sherman Township where she lived until her death, which occurred on Wednesday, August 11th. She was a noble, charitable woman, a member of the M. E. Church since 1853. The bereaved husband and family have universal sympathy in their sad bereavement. ~ The Newton Record, August 27, 1897.
