Elvin L. Stringer

Elvin L. “Mike” Stringer, 76, of 118 S. 6th Ave. E., a resident of Newton for 29 years and former farmer in the Reasnor and Metz communities, died Monday evening, Oct. 30, at Skiff Medical Center following a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Frederick K. Kramer, rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Progress Industries may be left at the funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Wilma; three daughters, Sue (Mrs. Ted) Patterson of Newton, Jeannie (Mrs. Clarence) Hughes of Tempe, Ariz., and Peggy (Mrs. Steven) Guthrie of Long Grove; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Croll of West Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Owen “Pete” Stringer, in 1960.

Mr. Stringer was an employee of the Iowa Department of Transportation until retiring in 1978.

The son of Everett and Leota May Owen Stringer, he was born June 23, 1913 in Neosha County, Kan., and attended Kansas country schools.

He was married to Wilma Cooper Dec. 18, 1935 in Newton.
