Frances Smith

Frances “Fran” Meadows Smith, 61, of Manchester, Tenn., a former longtime resident of Newton, died Monday Dec. 11, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of cancer.

Graveside rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Newton Union Cemetery.

The Rev. Gary Davis, pastor of the Metz Community Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 3 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Survivors are her husband Hugh “Frosty” Smith; three sons, Billy Jenkins of Texas, Marvin “Jim” Jenkins of Newton and Frosty Smith of Manchester, Tenn.; two daughters, Sara Jane (Mrs. Robert) Preston of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Robin (Mrs. Duane) Van Veen of Newton; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Verna Taylor and Helen Meadows and a grandson.

Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, moved to Manchester in 1978.

The daughter of Hubert and Marie Hannigan Meadows, she was born March 22, 1928 in Newton and attended Jasper County Schools.

She was married to Hugh Smith March 17, 1956 in Princeton. Mo.
