Vester E. Smith

Vester E. Smith, 74, of 709 W. 11 St. S., a resident of Jasper County for more than 60 years, died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 9, at the Smith farm southeast of Newton, following a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after noon today. Visitation will be held 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church may be left at the church or the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Genevieve; a son, Jim of Plano, Texas; a daughter Sheri Hilmer of Ames; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Edith (Mrs. Elvin) Hart of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jesse and Henry, and three sisters, Sarah Daniels, Minnie Smith and Alice Smith.

Mr. Smith, a retired car dealer at the Newton Buick-Pontiac dealership, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and BPOE Elks Lodge 1270 and was a Navy Veteran of World War II.

The son of Edward B. and Charlotte Castleman Smith, he was born Oct. 30, 1914 on a farm southeast of Newton, was a 1932 graduate of Newton Community High School and had attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines.

He was married to Genevieve Sullivan April 16, 1939 in Newton.
