Hurstel O. “Pete” Simpson, 61, of 213 W. 9th St. N., a longtime resident of Newton, died of a heart attack Wednesday morning, July 5, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Darrell Bailey, pastor the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Friday. Visitation with the family will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors are his step-father, Sterling Delk of Newton; four brothers, Homer Simpson of Colfax, Ralph Simpson of Kellogg and Robert Delk and Le Roy Delk, both of Newton; and three sisters, Lela (Mrs. Gerald) Young and Rose Anderson, both of Newton and Nancy (Mrs. Ray) Fuller of Baxter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clyde Delk.

Mr. Simpson, a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 997, worked in the Maytag Co. foundry.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Simpson had served in the cavalry in the European Theater. During the Korean Conflict he served in the medical corps in the South Pacific. Mr. Simpson received a number of decorations, including the Purple Heart, while serving in the Korean Conflict.

The son of Thomas and Morning Gibson Simpson, he was born Nov. 26, 1927 in Pormleyville, Ky., and attended Barnes City schools.
