Gladys E. Powell

Gladys E. Kline Powell, 84, of 623 N. 3rd Ave. E., a resident of Newton since 1923 and a beautician for 65 years, died of heart failure Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25, at the Colonial Manors in Baxter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church.

The Rev. Raymond Barnett, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 8 a.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to a fund in Mrs. Powell’s name will be accepted.

Survivors are a daughter, Dorothy Ellen (Mrs. Roscoe) Hallam of Newton; a grandson; two sisters, Ava Jones of Grinnell and Hazel Simmon of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and a brother, Forest Kline of Rimrock, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Carroll L. Morrow, in 1949, her second husband Russell W. Powell, in 1955, four brothers, Dawson, Chester and Kenneth and Guy in infancy and an infant granddaughter in 1958.

Mrs. Powell was a member of the First Christian Church, a 50-year member of the Newton chapter 100 of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Nazareth White Shrine, Ladies Elks Club, Ladies Auxiliary of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and a past president of the Kiwanis Queens.

The daughter of William O. and Mary Agnes Jacob Kline, she was born Nov. 20, 1904 in Jacob Switch in Poweshiek County, attended Grinnell schools and was graduated from Brodsky’s School of Cosmetology.

She was married to Russell W. Powell April 28, 1952 in Newton.
