Zane L. Peterson

Zane L. Peterson, 67, of 806 E. 12th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1988, died of cancer Sunday evening, Aug. 6, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reese Chapel.

The Rev. Raymond Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions to the organization of the donor’s choice will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Maxine; two brothers, Edward of Newton and John of Des Moines; and five sisters, Avonel Garvin, Anita Johnson, Norma Allspach, and Nellie Ann Meldrem, all of Newton, and Jean Wood of St. Joseph, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Roger, and a sister, Janice.

Mr. Peterson, a farmer in Palo Alto Township until retiring in 1980, was a longtime member of the Palo Alto Grange and was a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

The son of Roy and Elva Lowry Peterson, he was born Dec. 22, 1921 in Colfax, attended Jasper County schools and was a 1940 graduate of Newton Community High School.

He was married to Maxine Hummel Feb. 10, 1973 in Newton.
