DES MOINES -- Funeral services for Bess “Bessie” M. Hewitt Powell, 75, of 2525 S.W. 80th, Des Moines, a former resident of Newton, were held Monday, Oct. 2, at the Southtown Funeral Home Chapel in Des Moines.

The Rev. Gene Anderson, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola, conducted services. Cremation followed.

Private burial services will be conducted at a later date.

She died recently at her home in Des Moines.

Surviving are four grandchildren, Patty, Sheree, John and Jennifer Knotch, all of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Edward Russell Powell, Sept. 15, 1989 and a daughter.

Mrs. Powell, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, had been a bookkeeper at the Kresge Corp. until retiring in 1979.

The daughter of Russell and Amanda Jagau Hewitt, she was born Jan. 8, 1914 in Marshalltown.

Mrs. Powell moved to Des Moines from Newton six years ago.
