HOPKINS, Minn. - Richard Dean Southern, 50 of Hopkins, Minn., son of Francis and Margery Southern of Newton, died following a heart attack Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 15, at a Minneapolis, Minn. hospital.

Funeral services are pending at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

HOPKINS, Minn. - Funeral services for Richard Dean Southern of Hopkins, Minn., a former resident of Mingo, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Newton First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Ashton Cemetery north of Mingo.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Saturday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Family visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Hopkins died Wednesday afternoon at a Minneapolis, Minn., hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Survivors are his parents, Francis A. and Margery Wiley Southern of Newton and a sister, Lana (Mrs. Richard) Kruse of Ankeny.

Mr. Southern, a senior system analyst, was a 25-year employee of Norwest Bank of Minneapolis, Minn. He was nominated by his co-workers and received the bank's distinguished service and excellence award in December, 1988.

He was born Oct. 4, 1938 in Marshalltown, was a graduate of Mingo Community High School and attended Simpson College in Indianola and Drake University in Des Moines.

He grew up in the Mingo area and resided in Des Moines for a few years before moving to the Minneapolis area in 1964.
