GRINNELL -- Arl Crews, 78, of Grinnell, formerly of Lynnville, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Lynnville Friends Church with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, and the Rev. Jeff Lee, pastor of the Lynnville Friends Church, officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery near Lynnville.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell after noon Friday, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice, St. Francis Manor or to the Grinnell Christian Church and left at the funeral home.

The son of Clifford and Zelpha Mae (Smith) Crews, he was born May 22, 1927, in Grinnell. He was raised in Searsboro and Lynnville, where he graduated from Lynnville High School in 1945. He served with the U. S. Air Force in the Philippines from 1945 to 1947.

On Feb. 11, 1951, he married Louise Gause in Lynnville. The couple lived in Centerville, Cherokee and Clinton, where he worked for J.C. Penney and as a sales representative. In 1953, the family moved to Grinnell, and he owned and operated the Farm and Home Store for 35 years. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell.

While living in Lynnville he was a member of the Lynnville Friends Church and was involved in various organizations and activities. After moving to Grinnell, he became a member of the Grinnell Christian Church and enjoyed volunteering at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and St. Francis Manor. He enjoyed working in his garden, caring for his flowers and hostas.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Stacey L. Lisk of Des Moines; one son, Bradley A. Crews of New Port Richey, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
