PONCA CITY, Okla. -- John Dennis Cook, 50, of Ponca City, Okla., formerly of Newton, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center.
A prayer service will be held today at 7 p.m. at the Ponca Indian Cultural Center. The traditional funeral feast will be at noon today at the Ponca Indian Cultural Center, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Louis V. Headman, pastor of Ponca Indian Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will follow at the Ponca Tribal Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel of Ponca City, Okla.
He was born March 24, 1955, in Newton, the son of Earl Wayne Cook and Mary Evelyn (Holder) Cook. He attended school in Newton and began cross country truck driving at the age of 18 for Roseway, where he was awarded driver of the year in 1980. In 1980, he settled in Ponca City and worked at G and S Transportation, Swope's, Ponca Iron and Metal, Jupiter Chemicals and Sykes. At the time of his death, he was driving for Bowers Trucking.
On March 10, 1989, he married Virginia Headman in Ponca City, Okla. He was a truck mechanic and completely disassembled and reassembled truck engines. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and drag racing. He also enjoyed working with computers.
He is survived by three sons, Dustin Kent, John Cook II and Joshua Isaac Cook, all of Ponca City, Okla.; two daughters, Desiré Kent of Ponca City, Okla., and Krystal Carson of Okanogan, Wash.; two sisters, Denise Shannon of Monroe and Phyllis Pierce of Austin, Texas; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois; two brothers, Clarence and Dean; and his father-in-law, Isaac Headman.
