ALTOONA, Iowa – Bert Den Otter, 97, of Altoona, died Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Altoona Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe with the Rev. Greg Brown, pastor of Monroe First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silent Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation with the family will be at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorials to Monroe First Baptist Church will be accepted. The son of Richard and Ella Van Den Baard Den Otter, he was born Dec. 7, 1899, in Otley. He attended Otley area rural schools.

A longtime resident of the Otley and Pella area, he moved to Altoona in 1995. He previously resident in Plant City, Fla., for 30 years and lived in Des Moines while working as a section hand for the Rock Island Railroad.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan of Des Moines; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Jack Robinson; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two half-brothers, Wendel and Robert, both of Webster, Wis.; and a half-sister, Nona Linden of Hawthorne, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; six half-brothers; and a half sister. ~ Newton Daily News, August 4, 1997
