MONROE – John Den Otter, 81, of Monroe, a resident of Heritage Manor in Newton since the middle of March, died Sunday evening at the Manor.

John De Otter rites Thursday at Monroe churchMONROE – Funeral services for John Den Otter, 81, of 108 Taylor St., Monroe, a resident of Monroe since 1966 and former Otley, Reasnor and Monroe area farmer, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Monroe.
The Rev. Eldon Pals, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home in Newton after 7 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society will be accepted. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
He died Sunday evening at the Heritage Manor in Newton where he has been a resident since the middle of March.
Survivors are two sons, Donald of Richmond, Va., and Burton of Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. William (Ruth) Vriezelaar of Yuba City, Calif., and Mrs. Conrad (Lois) Donahue of Monroe; a number of grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Masters of Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 1966.
Mr. Den Otter was baptized and attended the United Methodist Church in Newton, and later attended the First Baptist Church in Monroe.
Since his retirement Mr. Den Otter has been an active member in the Hunting Club in the Reasnor area.
The son of Richard and Ellen Den Otter, he was born Feb. 7, 1901 in Jasper County.
He was married to Sarah Shipper March 12, 1924 in Jasper County.
After the death of his mother, he was raised by several maternal aunts. ~ Newton Daily News, April 20, 1982.
