John X. Power, 90, of Newton died Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Friends are invited to join the family from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday in the Garden Room at Park Centre, 500 1st St. N. in Newton. The body has been cremated. A burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery at a later date. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to the University of Iowa Foundation or to Dollars for Scholars and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of William C. and Lovina (McKeehan) Power, he was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Tecumseh, Neb. He was a 1931 graduate of Newton Senior High School and was part of the first four-year graduated class of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa.

On Nov. 17, 1935, he married Jean Scott in Newton. He was a pharmacist and owned and operated Power Drug on the west side of the Newton square.

The Power family started Power Drug in 1924. John started working there as a pharmacist in 1935 and took over the business in 1955. Power Drug operated for 75 years in Newton.

Mr. Power was a past member of Newton Rotary, charter member of the President's Club of the University of Iowa Foundation and past board member of the Newton Home Savings and Loan (now the First Federal Bank).

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Joan Power of Burlington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Devon Dietz of Davenport and Joyce and Richard Pattschull of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, William C. Power, Jr.
