WATERLOO - H. James Potter, 55, of Waterloo, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, July 30, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Millersburg Cemetery near Millersburg.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to service on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Waterloo Community Playhouse or Newspapers In Education, c/o The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
The son of Harry H. and Dorothy (Busby) Potter, he was born Aug. 13, 1947, in Newton. He married Diane Mathias on Aug. 30, 1969, in Indianola. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa. He was an editor at the Maquoketa Sentinel Press newspaper for six years and former campaign press secretary for Congressman Mike Blouin. He also worked at the Newton Daily News and was editor at the Ames Tribune, where he worked for seven years. He later worked for Starr & Associates in West Des Moines for five years, and then became the City Editor at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, where he has worked for the past seven years.
Mr. Potter was a member of the Waterloo Community Playhouse and belonged to many volunteer and civic organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Diane, of Waterloo; two sons and a daughter-in-law, J. Erik and Janet Potter of Jewell and Andrew Michael Potter of Denver, Colo.; his mother, Dorothy, of Newton; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Jodi Potter of Grinnell, Jeff and Lorraine Potter of Newton and Craig and Marcanne Potter of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father.
