H. W. Phipps, 80, of 2305 E. 19th St. N., Lot 26 E in Newton died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at his home.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor Jim Olson of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. The body has been cremated. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Marysville Cemetery in Hamilton.
Family visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service with a coffee time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or in H. W. Phipps' name and may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Henry D. and Alma P. (Day) Phipps, he was born June 9, 1923, in Consol. He graduated from Lovilia High School in 1941. On July 4, 19421, he married Joy M. Davis in Unionville, Mo. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a farmer and worked for the V.A. Hospital in Knoxville for 30 years. He retired in 1983. He lived in Lovilia for more than 50 years and has been a resident of Newton since 2001.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dick and Noreen of Rapid City, S.D., David and Kathy of Norwich, Conn., and Dennis Phipps of Springfield, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Joe Keeton of Newton; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Sinclair of Albia; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Karen Phipps; a grandson and a granddaughter.
