CEDAR RAPIDS – Helen Fern (Schnug) Elscott, 96, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Northbrook Manor in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home with the Rev. David Wendel of the First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating. Private burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the Service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to the First United Methodist Church and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Henry Peter and Margaret Ann (Kline) Schnug, she was born Sept. 25, 1906, in Jasper County. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1925. On May 12, 1934, she married Delmar C. "Del" Elscott in Galesburg. She was a teacher at the Killduff, Reasnor, Rosehill and Mariposa country schools for nine years. She also was a lunchroom hostess at Berg Junior High School for five years.

Mrs. Elscott was a member of the First United Methodist Church and lived in Jasper County until September 2002 when she moved to Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Jerry Davis of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Merlin, Clifford, Eldred and Harold Schnug; and three sisters, Pearl Rohrdanz, Ruby Ver Steeg and Florence Butin.
