PRAIRIE CITY - Aletta Marie Beerends, 80, of Prairie City died Saturday, Aug. 16, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City with Pastor Adrian Eising and Pastor Sheldon Starkenburg officiating. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to the Christian Reformed Church or Helping Hands Society. A fellowship time is planned following the burial.

The daughter of Andrew and Gertie (Van Hal) Van Sant, she was born March 14, 1923, near Killduff. She attended school in Jasper County and moved to Prairie City in December 1993. On Dec. 31, 1949, she married Donald Beerends in Sully. She was a housewife and a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Bryce and Arlene Beerends and Dale and Valerie Beerends, all of Monroe, and Marvin and Joni Beerends of Knoxville; a daughter, Glenda Eisbrenner of Prairie City; 11 grandchildren; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerrit and Leona Van Sant and Doyle and Phyllis Van Sant, all of Sully, Dick and Bonnie Van Sant of Des Moines, Henry and Jeanne Van Sant of Cypress, Calif., Delmar and Shirley Van. Sant of Kensington, Md., and Harold and Suzie Van Sant of St. Ann, Mo.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Delbert Allison of Lynnville; two sisters-in-law, Berdina Van Sant of Sully and Marcella Van Sant of Long Beach, Calif., and an aunt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Willis and Andrew; and two sisters, Jennie Van Sant and Gennevieve Henderson.

A Celebration of the Life of Aletta Marie Beerends, 80, of Prairie City, who died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, was held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City. Pastors Adrian Eising and Sheldon Starkenburg officiated at the services. Music was provided by Doris Van Gorp, organist and Phyllis DeVries, vocalist. Jim Beerends played the trumpet.

Those on the flower committee were Amber Beerends, Regina Beerends, Mary Eisbrenner, Kammie Beerends, Amanda Beerends, Kiffin Smith, and Dallon Beerends.

Interment was at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Casket bearers were Jim Beerends, Mark Beerends, Jason Eisbrenner, Greg Beerends, Mary Eisbrenner, and Regina Beerends. Honorary bearers were Amanda Beerends, Dallon Beerends, Kiffin Smith, Kammie Beerends, Nathan Kain, and Chad Kain.

Aletta was born on March 14, 1923, near Kilduff. She was the oldest of 12 children born to Andrew and Gertie (Van Hal) Van Sant. She attended school in Jasper County and lived all of her life there as well, moving to Prairie City in December 1993.

On Dec. 31, 1949, she married Donald Beerends at her parents' home in Sully. She was a devoted housewife and a member of the Christian Church in Prairie City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1982; two brothers, Willis and Andrew; and two sisters, Jennie Van Sant and Gennevieve Henderson.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Bryce and Arlene Beerends, Dale and Valerie Beerends, all of Monroe, and Marvin and Joni Beerends of Knoxville; a daughter, Glenda Eisbrenner of Prairie City; 12 grandchildren; six brothers and their wives, Gerrit and Leona Van Sant of Sully, Dick and Bonnie Van Sant of Des Moines, Henry and Jeanne Van Sant of Cypress, Calif., Delmar and Shirley Van Sant of Kennsington, Md., Harold and Suzie Van Sant of St. Ann, Mo., and Doyle and Phyllis Van Sant of Sully; a sister and her husband, Geraldine and Delbert Allison of Lynnville; two sisters-in-law, Berdina Van Sant of Sully and Marcella Van Sant of Long Beach, Calif.; and her aunt, Jennie Vander Zyl of Pella.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Reformed Church or Helping Hands Society.

Arrangements were made by Walters Coburn Funeral Home.
