Ruth Anna Hannagan, 79, of Newton died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County — Monarch Wing or Willowbrook Adult Day Care Center may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Samuel Calvin and Ethel Mae (Larrison) Townsend, she was born July 17, 1926, in Logansport, Ind. She graduated from high school in Logansport in 1945 and attended Des Moines Area Community College from 1980 to 1981. She was the first payroll clerk for the State of Iowa and worked as a clerk typist for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Newton for 13 years. She retired in 1991.
After retiring, she attended Willowbrook Adult Day Care. She received an award from the State of Iowa for being on the Governor's Council Medical Board.
Mrs. Hannagan attended several churches while living in Newton and was a member of the Methodist Church in Logansport, Ind., where she was baptized. She grew up in Longsport, Ind., and also lived in Rhode Island, California and Pennsylvania. She later lived in Newton, moving back and forth between Newton and Logansport, Ind., many times.She is survived by three daughters, Linda (LaMonte) Smith of San Dimas, Calif., Rita Kanne of Newton and Dianne (Larry) Krier of Ottumwa; a son, Ed Hannagan of Humboldt; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Townsend of Knoxville, Tenn., and JoDee Townsend of Ames; a brother-in-law, Eugene Koske of Royal Center, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Edward Hannagan Jr.; two brothers, Lowell and Charlie Townsend; and a sister, Geneva Koske.
