James B. Smith, 69, of 321 E. 8th St. S. died Thursday, July 17, at the Veteran's Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Robert R. and Elreta (Betterton) Smith, he was born July 27, 1933, in Downers Grove, Ill. On Aug. 14, 1970, he married Doris L. Bissett in Newton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Don G. Smith; Ronald R. and Sheila Smith, all of Newton; and John Smith of Monroe, Mich.; two sisters, Pat Braaksma of Chariton and Sharon Ucci of Monroe, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Margaret A. (Williams) Smith; brother, Thomas F. Smith; brother-in-law, Wayne Braaksma; and sister-in-law, Sharon Smith.
