Glendora R. Smith, 94, formerly of 222 E. 4th St. N. died of heart failure Monday, July 14, at Baxter Health Care in Baxter.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence- Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Mary Schnepf, associate pastor of the First United Methodist, Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 9 until 10 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or to Hospice of Jasper County.
The daughter of James T. Lewis of Great Britain and Elizabeth (Lewis) Lewis of Wales, she was born July 9, 1909, in Forbush in Appanoose County. She attended school in Centerville.
On Dec. 28, 1948, she married Duane "Dewey" Smith in Rochester. Minn. She worked at the Hotel Maytag Coffee Shop as a pastry cook and was employed at Walgreen’s. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in Centerville, past member of Pocahontas Lodge; Great Pocahontas for the State of Iowa, past Women of the Moose recorder and past president, and former member of Academy of Friendship and College of Regents.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Edwin Miller of Newton and Marilyn and Harold Purvis of Apache Junction, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 18 great great -grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Lewis; a granddaughter, Beth Martin; two sisters, Grace Bedinger and Florence Harwood; and a brother, John Lewis.
