O. Wayne McBride, 96, of Newton died of heart failure Sunday, July 20, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton, with the Rev. Michael E. Dixon of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Habitat for Humanity.

The son of William L. and Laura Lillian (Perry) McBride, he was born May 1, 1907, in Reasnor. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1927. On May 4, 1940, he married Marie Jelsma in Oskaloosa. He worked as a machinist for 40 years for the Maytag Company and retired in 1969. Mr. McBride was a member of the Jasper County Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and the Rev. Michael E. Dixon of St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and John Longnecker of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Dale and Wilbur McBride; and a sister, Katharine Gerbracht.
