DES MOINES – Johnnie Dean Holmes, 52, of Des Moines, formerly of Newton, died of a liver ailment Wednesday, July 2.

A public visitation will be held today at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, from 2 to 5 p.m. The body will be cremated following the service.

No funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name.

He was the son of Austin and Helen (Ridgeway) Holmes. He was a professional cook and in-home caregiver. Mr. Holmes enjoyed fishing, car races, garage sales and people. He resided in Newton, Des Moines and Chariton. He also lived in Missouri, Texas, Illinois and California over the years.

Survivors include five sisters, Mary Stockbauer, Dorothy Lewis, Judy Swihart, Sarah Morawski and Carol Hedges; a brother, Richard Holmes; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Raymond, Gary and Charles and a sister, Jane Bramble.
