Eugene M. Hill, 89, of 2009 S. 44th Ave. E. died Monday, July 14, at Skiff Medical Center
in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Newton with Dr. Marvin Potter and the Rev. John Zieman officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today at the church where the family will be available

from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the United Presbyterian Church and may be left at the church the day of the visitation or the service, or may be left at the funeral home.

The son of George R. and Minnie (Rees) Hill, he was born Oct. 24, 1913, in Palo Alto Township in Jasper County. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1931 and from Iowa State University in 1937. He also did graduate work at the University of Illinois. On Nov. 28, 1946, he married Ruth H. Hill in Heyworth, Ill.

Mr. Hill served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as a major. He was a teacher and a farmer. He also was a state senator for 20 years, during which time he served on the Iowa Civil War Centennial Commission, represented Iowa at the National Legislative Conference. He was a member and an elder of the United Presbyterian Church, a member of the Jasper County Historical Society and The Salvation Army Board.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David E. Hill of Davenport, Robert A. Hill of Tabor, S.D., John C. Hill of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia R. Hill of Middletown, Conn., and Kathleen M. Andreae of Wellington, New Zealand; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy; a brother, George R. Hill; and two sisters, Marjorie Van Tress and Mary Alice Wallick.
