Sidney M. Dunitz, 70, died Sunday, July 20, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Boulevard in Des Moines. Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave. in Des Moines, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Sid Dunitz Music Scholarship, administered by First Newton National Bank, 100 N. 2nd Ave. W., Newton 50208, or to the Marcovis Youth Fund at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.

The son of Phillip and Ida Dunitz, he was born April 17, 1933, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton Senior High School and the University of Iowa, where he held the distinction of being the first "Herky the Hawk."

He achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. When he returned from the service, he took over the Gralnek-Dunitz Company. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elk, the Newton High School Alumni Association and Tifereth Israel Synagogue.

Survivors include his wife, Jeri of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Dunitz and Amy Riesenberg of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Toby and Gordon Newman of Highland Park, Ill.; a brother, Norman and Annette Dunitz of Tulsa, Okla.; four nieces; three nephews; and extended family members.
