MANCHESTER – Rita E. (Gaffney) Brown, 74, of Manchester, formerly of Newton, died Friday, July 18, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester with the Rev. Ralph Simington officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Monti at 1 p.m.

Friends may call at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home& Crematory in Manchester from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour before services at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday. A Rosary Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The daughter of Frank M. and Mary G. (Heffernen), she was born Aug. 26, 1928, near Ryan. She graduated from Saint John's Catholic High School in Ryan.

On Sept. 24, 1947, she married Harland Brown in Ryan. She was a homemaker. She and her husband resided in Independence and later in Manchester. She lived in Newton under her daughter Brenda's care for four years. She then returned to Manchester and entered the Good Neighbor Home.

Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards.

Survivors include her husband, Harland of Manchester; eight children and their spouses, H. Andrew Brown of San Francisco, Calif., Lorna Koeninger of Yukon, Okla., Marsha and Lee Peterson of Bolingbrook, Ill., Georgia Doughtery of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nina Hoppe of Cedar Rapids, Terrance Brown of Kellogg, Brenda and Dave Trostel of Newton and Cecil Brown of Manchester, 18 grandchildren; 12 great -grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Janet Gaffney of Manchester, and Vincent and Jodie Gaffney of Fairfax; and one sister, Catherine Ralston of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Marie Brown, at birth, and her parents.
