Robert McWhirter Dies Today

Robert McWhirter, 57, Baxter implement dealer, died this morning at Des Moines General Hospital. Funeral services are pending at Boyd-Nickell Funeral Home in Baxter. ~ The Newton Daily News, Oct 15, 1976

B. W. McWhirter Dies
Baxter (Special) – Robert W. McWhirter Jr., 57, of Baxter, who was widely known in the farm implement business, died Friday at a Des Moines Hospital.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter with the Rev. Gary Hubley and Robert Connor officiating.

Burial was in the Baxter Cemetery.

Mr. McWhirter was born in Jasper County Feb. 16, 1919 to Robert and Zelpha Fay Russell McWhirter.

He was graduated from Newton Community High School in 1936 and married Lillian Robinett Aug. 14, 1940 in Eldora.

They farmed in Jasper County and he started in the implement business in 1945, moving to Baxter in 1951 to open McWhirter Implement.

Later he founded – the Chariton Farm Machinery Auction Co. and organized and was a partner in Minnesota Implement Inc. and Midwest Auction, both at Grand Meadow, Minn.

He had many other various business interests.

At his death he was one of the largest dealers in the United States.

Surviving are his wife, his parents now living at Waterville, Minn., two sons, Robert D. McWhirter of Baxter and Eugene McWhirter of Mount Pleasant; five daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Cupples of Newton, Mrs. David (Carolyn) Ankeny of Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Larry (Sharon Kaye) Weter of Baxter, Linda Sue and Laurie Beth at home; and Ben and Marie Bucklin.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Ruth) Nash [sic-Nass] of San Gabriel, Calif., Mrs. Enoch (Helen) Rexroat and Mrs. Dave (Clarice) Trotter, both of Newton; and Mrs. Ron (Alice) Trotter of Brainerd, Minn.

Memorials may be directed to the Cancer Fund.

Boyd-Nickell Funeral home in Baxter is in charge of services. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 18, 1976
