Death Claims Tom Kennedy

Jasper County Farmer Living West of Newton Dies Last Night After Two Months' Illness

Tom Kennedy, well known farmer in this vicinity, died at his home three miles west of Newton Friday night. He had been ill for the past three months with diabetes.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Indiana July 18, 1845, and came to Iowa when he was five years old, going first to Polk county. He later moved to Jasper county which has been his home ever since. He served his country during the dark days of the Civil war. After the war he was returned to Jasper county and resumed his work as a farmer. Mr. Kennedy was married to Cornelia Sims in 1871. One child was born to this union, the child dying in infancy. Mrs. Kennedy died a year ago last may. Since that time his sister-in-law, Mrs. Austin Halliwill and her son have lived with Mr. Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy is survived by two brothers Jesse of Oklahoma and Leonard of Seattle, Washington and two sisters, Mrs. Peter Helphrey and Mrs. John Kendig, both of Newton.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sugar Grove Grange hall. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 10, 1920

Funeral For Tom Kennedy Sunday P.M.
Last Rites Performed for Another Civil war
Veteran; Buried in Metz Cemetery.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Sugar Grove grange hall west of Newton for Tom Kennedy who has answered the last summons Friday, July 9.

Mr. Kennedy has suffered from diabetes for many weeks and death came as a relief of his suffering. His age was seventy-five years and he had served his country nobly in the years of civil war.

Dr. G. C. Williams of Newton paid the last tribute to this old soldier with a few appropriate remarks. Music was rendered by Misses Frankie Morrow and Easther Beatty.

Those who served as pall bearers were George Baker, E. R. Wilson, Ray Leeper, W. H. Bradberry, Robert Sparing and Ed. Morrisey.

Burial was made in the cemetery near Metz. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 12, 1920.
