Marvin J. Boothroy, 79, of Newton died of cancer Thursday, June 5, at Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.

Private family services will be held at a later date. No visitation is scheduled. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to the Hospice Capital Campaign and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Homer and Bessie V. (Bailey) Boothroy, he was born March 24, 1924, in Mitchellville. He lived in Goodland, Kan., before moving to Newton in 2001, and he graduated from Goodland High School. On Oct. 8, 1964, he married Arliss V. Illingsworth in Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Boothroy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked at Southwestern Bell for 39 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the VPW of Goodland, Kan.

Survivors include his wife; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jan Bailey of West Des Moines; a brother and sister-in-law, Doyle and Mary Boothroy of Virginia; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great -grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Sprengle.
