E. Louise (Johnston) Copeland, 104, of-Newton died of heart failure Monday, June 2, at Park Centre Health Care in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton, with Pastor Mary Schnepf of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Chariton Cemetery in Chariton.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Saturday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Park Centre Health Care Center.

The daughter of Thomas William Johnston and Estella Smyth, she was born March 12, 1899, in Chariton. She graduated from Chariton Senior High School in 1918 and attended the University of Iowa. On Jan. 4, 1922, she married Lawrence Gibbon Copeland in Chariton. Mrs. Copeland was a member of the First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. and the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

Survivors include a son, Hugh Copeland of Green Valley, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Lawrence, Jr., sister, Marjorie Surtees and a brother, Hugh Johnston.
