COLFAX – Jerry Dean VanOort, 46, of Colfax died Monday, May 26, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Colfax United Methodist Church in Colfax with the Rev. Jill Flyr officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name.

The son of Cornie and Sharon (Yohn) VanOort, he was born Sept. 9, 1956, in Britt. He graduated in 1975 from Garner High School. On Oct. 21, 1978, he married Marsha Bang in Garner. Mr. VanOort was a former Colfax city council member and a former member of the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department. He was a mechanic for Sara Lee Company in Ankeny. He was a resident of Colfax for 21 years and enjoyed auto racing and working on cars.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Levi and Jenny of Cedar Rapids and Jerry "Jigs" of Colfax; .two daughters and a son-in-law, Nikki and Jeff. Gieseke of Owatonna, Minn., and Raine VanOort of Iowa City; three grandchildren; three brothers, Randy and Mark VanOort, both of Des Moines, and Casey VanOort of Texas; a sister, Shelley Wangsness of Ankeny; and his mother, Sharon Larson of Crystal Lake.

He was preceded in death by his father.
