PELLA - Barbara Anna Van Essen, 97, of Pella, formerly of Prairie City, died Wednesday, May 21, at Pella Regional Health Center - Long Term Care Unit in Pella.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella with Pastor Norm Kolenbrander officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Friends may call today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.

The daughter of Everett and Betsy De Haai, she was born Sept. 9, 1905, near Monroe. She was a nurse's aid for Pella Community Nursing Home. On February 27, 1926, she married Martin Van Essen.

Mrs. Van Essen was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella and enjoyed linen crocheting until her health failed at the age of 93. She lived all her life in the Pella and Prairie City areas.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Ruth Barnes, Doyle Van Essen, Robert Van Essen, Marilyn De Jong, Judy Roorda, Norman Van Essen, Audrey Peterson, Leann Miller, Nora De Reus, Betsy Burch, Marvin De Haai, Mildred Sutphen, Lelah Robson, Mike Gates and Theresa Rempe.

She was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, John De Haai, and three sisters, Polona Pettet, Mae Hoksbergen and Myrtle Gates.
