MELBOURNE – Deryl "Lum" Damman, 73, of Melbourne, formerly of Newton, died Saturday, May 24, in Marshalltown, while under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne. Burial will follow services in the Melbourne Cemetery.

Visitation will be held today from 5 to 9 p.m. at Ryan-Davis Funeral Home in Melbourne, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Deryl Damman Memorial Fund.

The son of Walter and Mabel (Miller) Damman, he was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Newton. He was raised in Newton and moved to Melbourne in his mid-teens, where he graduated from Melbourne High School in 1947. On September 5, 1948, he married Eileen Gauch in Melbourne. He lived and farmed in the Melbourne area for all of his adult life. He was an active fast-pitch softball pitcher well into his fifties when golf became his passion until he could not play anymore. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Pork Producers and Lincoln Valley Golf Club.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Warner and Jim Whitacre of Newton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Deanna Damman of Melbourne and Dean and Janet Damman of Melbourne; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Gary Barnes of Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
