COMANCHE, Texas – Dorothy Blackwood, 92, of Comanche, Texas, died Wednesday, May 7, at Brownwood Care Center in Brownwood, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel in Comanche, Texas. Graveside services will be held at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton on Monday at 11 a.m. with Comanche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

A local visitation will be held Monday at Pence Funeral Home in Newton from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Cancer Society, Comanche Unit, 804 W. Wright, Comanche, Texas 16442.

The daughter of Christine (Paulson) and Clifton Delano Newell, she was born March 20, 1911, in Newton. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught, in country schools near Newton for several years.

She married Dr. W. D. Blackwood on June 9, 1935, and moved to Hartshorne, Okla., where she worked in her husband's office. She worked for the Selective Service during World War II. In 1946 they moved to Comanche and she became active in PTA. She was a charter member of the Comanche Heritage Club, a Cub Scout den mother for the Blue Birds and a member of the retired teachers association. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Comanche, Texas.

Mrs. Blackwood served as a president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society several times. She also was a worthy matron the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Pat Clendenin of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Larry Blackwood of Dublin, Texas; a grandson and granddaughter; and sever al nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Paul Newell.
