COLFAX - Richard W. Beals, 78, of Colfax died Monday, May 19, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax with the Rev. Paul Elliott officiating. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery.
Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Diabetes Association.

The son of Jay R. and Lula (Kern) Beals, he was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Des Moines. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1945. On Oct. 30, 1945, he married Lois Lind in Colfax. He retired from the Maytag Corporation and was a member of the UAW. Mr. Beals was a member of Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax and served on the Colfax City Council as mayor pro-tem.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary and Lucretia Beals and Terry and Sheryl Beals, all of Colfax, and Michael Beals of Van Nuys, Calif.; four grandchildren; five great -grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Harold Hunter of Colfax; and a brother and sister-in-law, Art and Gloria Beals of Mingo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
