GRINNELL – Leona E. Ahrens, 83, of Grinnell, formerly rural Jasper County, died Monday at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Eugene Miller, retired pastor of the Grand Mound Iowa United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials will be accepted to the Ronald McDonald House.

The daughter of Frank and Alvena Schultz Carpenter, she was born April 28, 1920, near Montezuma. She was raised in the Grinnell and Malcom area and was a graduate of Grinnell High School. She taught rural school for several years near Grinnell.

She was married to Leo W. Ahrens June 3, 1944, in Philadelphia, Penn. The couple lived for several years in Philadelphia and later New London, Conn., while her husband served in the military. They moved to a farm west of Grinnell in 1946. She had been a resident of Francis Manor since September of 2002. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include one daughter, Ann Allen of Grand Mound; one brother, Gerald Carpenter of Des Moines; and four grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, one daughter, Cathy Brown, one sister, Opal Taylor, and one brother, Garland Carpenter, preceded her in death.
