Dwane Altemeier, 71, of rural Newton, died on Sunday, May 18, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Homer Perry of the Mayflower Home in Grinnell officiating. Burial will be in the Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home after noon today where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

The son of Morris and Beulah (Anderson) Altemeier, he was born on June 30, 1931, on the family farm near Newton. The family moved to a farm near Newburg, where he attended rural school and graduated with the Class of 1951 from Newburg High School.

On June 3, 1951, he was married to Helen Marlene Edwards in Newburg. The couple lived in the Grinnell area and he worked as a meat cutter for United Foods in Grinnell and as a truck driver for the Manatt Corporation. He also worked in the Buildings and Grounds Department of Grinnell College before moving to a farm near Newton in 1968. From 1968 to 1985 he farmed with his family.

He was a member of the Iowa National Guard, the Izaak Walton League, the Eagles Lodge, the NRA and the Gilman American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; mother, Beulah Altemeier of Grinnell; three daughters: Cindy Aikin of Gilman, Cathy Gilliland of Rose Hill and Cheryl Nolin of Reasnor; one son, Kevin Altemeier of Newton; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Earl of Brooklyn, Leo of Malcom, Clyde of Coal Valley, Ill., and Doyle of Gilman; and three sisters, Janice Sherlock and Lavonne Gosselink, both of Grinnell, and Karen Henderson of Macomb, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson.
