Marlan R. "Red" Shannon, 70, of 410 E. 21 St. S. died from complications of cancer Tuesday, March 12, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton with the Rev. Danny Hodges officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Community Heights Alliance Church Building Fund or to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home or at the church on Friday.

The son of Henry Edgar and Alta Grace (Deaton) Shannon, he was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Des Moines. He was a graduate of Monroe High School in 1951. He grew up in Monroe until moving to Newton in 1959.

On June 26, 1954, he married JoAnn Woodrow in Newton. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and worked for the Maytag Company for 36 years. He retired in 1987. Mr. Shannon attended Community Heights Alliance Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Dot Shannon of Liberty, Mo., and Gregory and Linda Shannon of Zeeland, Mich.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Tim Gordon of Newton; eight grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen Colyn of Monroe and Marlene and Bill Versteeg of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter (in infancy), three brothers and two sisters.
