Forrest R. Purvis, 81, of Newton, formerly of Kellogg, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials will be accepted to the Hospice of Jasper County — Monarch Wing and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of LeRoy and Essie (Hiatt) Purvis, he was born May 6, 1924, in Moravia and grew up in Mystic before living in Kellogg for 20 years and Newton for 33 years. On Dec. 1, 1945, he married Reva Ione Eaton in Centerville.

Mr. Purvis served in the U.S. Army as a corporal from 1946 to 1947, and he worked as a press operator for more than 15 years at the Maytag Company, and retired in 1986. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, UAW Local 997 and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Ione of Newton; three sons, Lyle Purvis, Larry (Deena) Purvis and Louie Purvis, all of Newton; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Floyd (Maxine) Purvis of Kellogg, Francis (Edna Mae) Purvis of Guernsey and Ferrell and Freman (Mary) Purvis, all of Centerville; one sister, Florine Brown of Centerville; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
