GRINNELL - Jean Barr 86, of Grinnell died Monday, April 21, 2003, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in. Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell United Methodist Church.

The daughter of Edwin and Myrtle Swearingen Hammer, she was born Dec. 5, 1916, near Newton. She was raised in Jasper County and was a graduate of Newton Senior High School. Following her education, she taught in a country school in Jasper County for several years.

She married John L. Barr on April 18, 1942, in Jefferson City, Mo. The couple farmed near the communities of Newburg, Kellogg and Newton. They later owned and operated a grain and hog farm near Grinnell.

They moved to Grinnell in 1995 and she had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 1997. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active in 4-H.

Survivors include two daughters, Joy Weeks of Grinnell and Nancy Barry of Cold Springs, N.Y.; one granddaughter; and one sister, Nita Hammer of Newton.

Her parents, husband, one daughter, Sandra Barr, and one sister, Nina Machin, preceded her in death.
