Irene Lois French was born in Jasper County, Iowa, Feb. 19, 1887. Died at Colorado Springs, Jan. 8, 1908, age 20 years, 10 months and 20 days.

Her short life of usefulness had been spent in the immediate vicinity graduating from Newton High School with the class of 1905 after which she commenced a life of a successful teacher. But in less than two years her health caused her to abandon school work. Last June she in company with her mother went to Colorado Springs with the hope that a change of climate would restore her to her former health. But the death angel was near and when he was picking choice flowers from among the mountains of Colorado, he chose and plucked our beautiful bud to carry home to her brother Earl, who preceded her May 15, 1906.

Her death was sudden and unexpected. The morning mail arrived and her mother was reading to her a letter from loved ones at home and had just finished the first page when another voice whispered, “Enough, come up higher your work on earth is finished.” Then as the dewdrops disappeared in the morning light, her beautiful life faced at the noonday hour and she was gone on to the glorious home of which she was assured when in early childhood she gave her heart to God and united with the Palo Alto U. P. Church of which she had been an active member aiding much with her sweet voice and musical talent.

She leaves to mourn her home going father, mother, three brothers and four sisters. They are Harry, Vern, Karl, Mabel, Mrs. Wm. Charlesworth, Mrs. Merritt Charlesworth and Mrs. J. I. Wilson and a large circle of friends.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gillis at the home where Irene had grown up, loved and cherished from infancy, on Monday, January 13 at 1 p.m.

The pallbearers were her three brothers, Harry, Vern and Karl, and brothers-in-law, M. Charlesworth, J. I. Wilson and W. E. Denniston. The interment was made in the Newton Cemetery.

Irene Lois French

Beautiful Young Jasper Co. Girl Passes Away.

At Colorado Spring on the eighth of January 1908 occurred the sad death of Miss Irene French, age twenty years, ten months and twenty days. Miss French was a Jasper County girl having been born on the old French farm three miles west of town, the nineteenth of Feb. 1887. She entered the Newton High School, graduating with the class of 1905, and immediately after, commenced teaching school. But on account of failing health, her doctor advised a change of climate and she in company with her mother Mrs. Lee French, went to Colorado Springs last June. Every hope was entertained for her recovery and her death was very unexpected. While her mother was reading a letter to her from the folks at home Irene passed quietly away. The body was brought back here on last Monday and the funeral was held from the house, Rev. Gillis officiating. From childhood Irene has been a member of the Palo Alto U.P. Church, an earnest worker assisting much with her musical talents.

She was a bright, sweet, loveable girl, and one who was her friend said it was good to have known her for her sunny disposition and very goodness made one a better person. She leaves to mourn her death her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee French, three brothers, Harry, Vern and Karl, and four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Charlesworth, Mrs. Merritt Charlesworth, Mrs. J. I. Wilson and Mable, living at home. Interment was in the Newton Cemetery.
