Marie E. (Van Gilst) Vance, 93, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Tuesday, March 25, at her home.

Funeral services were held March 29 at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, Ariz. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, at the United Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Cindy Jean Saul, interim pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 E. McDonald, Paradise Valley, Ariz. 85253 or to the Newton United Presbyterian Church.

The daughter of Cornelius and Maggie (Klyn) Van Gilst, she was born Oct. 12, 1909, in Fulton, S.D. She moved to Newton with her family in 1910, where she lived until moving to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1975. She attended Newton schools and American Institute of Banking. She joined the Jasper County Savings Bank as a bookkeeper in 1926 and retired from the bank as assistant vice president in 1966. She was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale, Ariz., a 50-year member of both Eastern Star and White Shrine, a member of the National Association of Bank Women in which she held both state and national offices and a member of P.E.O., Chapter AQ. In 1966, she married Robert E. Vance, a former Maytag executive, in Newton.

Survivors include one brother, Gerald Van Gilst of Lake Ridge, Va.; and five nieces and eight nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters, Genevieve Vaught and Helen Wollmann.
