Mrs. W. L. Scott, 71, of Roseburg, Ore., died Sunday morning, April 6, 1941, at Laramie Wyo., where she was visiting prior to coming to Iowa to make her future home. Mrs. Scott was the former Anna Hill of the Palo Alto neighborhood.
Her husband preceded her in death Jan. 2, 1940, and Mrs. Scott had disposed of her home in Roseburg preparatory to coming to Iowa. She had been visiting her sister, Mrs. John M. (Jennie) Reid and her niece, Miss Florence Reid at Laramie since March 25 and was coming to Iowa after Easter.
Suffers Heart Attack
In good health, she was looking forward to being in Newton with many of her former acquaintances and friends. She took ill suddenly Sunday morning and died within an hour or two of a heart attack.
Born March 1, 1870, she was the third child of Mr and Mrs Robert M. Hill, pioneer settlers in Palo Alto township four miles south of Newton. She attended the McCartney School No. 6 and the Newton high school. She was the first rural school graduate of Palo Alto township.
Taught in Jasper County
Mrs. Scott taught in the rural schools of Jasper county, in Newton, Kellogg and Colfax before going to Canon City, Colo. She was wed April 19, 1916, to W. L. Scott. They made their home in Kansas several years but more recently in Roseburg, Ore.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Reid of Laramie, Wyo., Mrs. Susie Greef of Eldora, Kate A. Hill, a missionary in India, a brother, R. A. Hill of Newton and a step-daughter, Mrs. Lilla Scott Vowel of Forest Grove, Ore.
A former member of the Palo Alto United Presbyterian church, she was a member of the Presbyterian church at Roseburg.
Rites Here Tuesday
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Palo Alto United Presbyterian church with Rev. W. W. Johnson of Newton in charge. The body was to be at the Murdoch Funeral home until 11 o'clock Tuesday morning.
Mrs. Scott was a first cousin of Tim J. Campbell, George E. Campbell, James R. Rhodes, Frank Hill, Dr. J. C. Hill, George R. Hill and Miss Marjorie Hill of Newton.
Mrs. Reid and Miss Florence Reid of Laramie, Wyo., were to accompany the body to Newton.
