William W. Phipps, 63, 2305 E. 19th St. N. died of respiratory failure Monday, March 10, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor Jim Olsen of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetery in rural Jasper County.

Friends may call today after 5 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Glen H. and Naomi (Bleakney) Phipps, he was born July 22, 1939, in Newton and attended Rock Creek Country School and Grinnell High School.

On Sept. 10, 1960, he married Ruth F. Benton in Unionville, Mo. He served in the United States Air Force and later worked as a truck driver. He retired from driving for Eagle Food Stores in 1995.

Mr. Phipps grew up in Rock Creek and Grinnell and lived in the Quad Cities from 1972 to 1995. He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 923, Malcom American Legion Post 733, Teamsters Local No. 371 and attended Zoar Church.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce and Mischel Johnson of Mingo and Phillip Johnson of Reinbeck; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Larry Lakin of Newton; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jack and Doris Phipps, Richard and Jody Phipps and John and Marcie Phipps, all of Rock Creek, and Jim Phipps of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a sister.
