Newburg, Ia. - Ashel K. Murphy, 67, farmer living west of here and formerly cashier of the Newburg bank, died at his home Sunday morning at 8 o’clock of a heart attack.
Born and reared in Buena Vista township near Murphy, the town which was named after his uncle, J. W. Murphy, he had made quite a record in his life. He was cashier at the Newburg bank for about 30 years and since 1930 had concentrated his time in farming. He was a member of the old Murphy band and of the Newburg Congregational church.
In Alabama
He was born Nov. 24, 1873, son of C. W. and Clarinda Murphy, pioneer residents of the county. He taught in the rural schools and was graduated from Valparaiso University at Valparaiso, Ind., and was located in Bessemer, Ala., from 1899 to 1908.
On June 24, 1902, he was united in marriage with Jessie Burroughs at Newburg, Ia., and they made their home in Alabama, later returning to Newburg.
To this union nine children were born, all of whom are living. They are: John and William of Syracuse, N. Y.; George of Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Wayne Estel of Grinnell; Mrs. George Laine of Fort Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Mahlon Johnson of Denver, Col.; Mrs. Ted Melchimer of Temple City, Calif.; Mrs. William McMeen of Bremerton, Wash., and Mrs. Russell Ellis of Greeley, Colo. Mrs. Ellis is here to spend the winter with her parents.
Others Surviving
He also is survived by three brothers and two sisters – H. C. Murphy, Olin H. Murphy and Hugh P. Murphy, Mrs. R. A. Wilson and Hermes C. Murphy, all of Newton – and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 12:30 o'clock t the U. B. Hickory Grove church. Burial was in the U. B. Hickory Grove cemetery.
